Residents in Orange and Osceola Counties have been fighting a toll road since 2018. Split Oak Forest was purchased by the state in the early 1990’s as a land and gopher tortoise mitigation to offset the construction of the Orange County Convention Center, and has been meticulously managed with taxpayer dollars. It has the strongest legal protections in the State. Allowing a toll road through it would set a legal precedent that could be detrimental not just to Split Oak, but to any conservation land in the state.
In 2020, residents scored a huge vicory, voting by more than 86% to continue to protect Split Oak. However, FWC, Orange and Osceola County have continued talks with the Central Florida Expressway authority to pursue the toll road. Friends of Split Oak Forest is asking for donations so that they can continue to fight them in court.
If you live in Orage or Osceola counties, there are additonal ways for you to take action, such as volunteering, calling/emailing representatives or speaking at county commission meetings. Visit SaveSplitOak.org to get in touch.
Save Split Oak has an email newsletter, an Instagram, and a Facebook page.
