About the painting:

2020. This piece is for a scientist to use in her talks, and I'm beyond thrilled to have the chance to collaborate in such a way. Whenever I get to work with others on a piece I feel more inspired and excited about it, so this week I put down the Florida Panther piece to take this up. I had been sending then sketches and they have been sending me photos from the field for the past couple of months.

This butterfly is a familiar subject for me! I painted it a little larger than life here to get in more details. It's an endangered Pine Rockland species that hosts on pineland croton. The larva prefer to eat the soft new plant growth of the croton, which happens in the aftermath of a fire in the landscape. Fire and/or mechanical clearing removes the overgrowth which would otherwise shade out tiny herbaceous plants like the croton. Remaining tracts of Pine Rocklands in Miami are so few and far between, and unprotected tracts so starved of this type of maintenance that many of its endemic tiny plant and animal species are endangered as a result
